"A career in the food industry is one of the best out there, and I’m proud to help guide students towards their own unique path into the sector."

I’m a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), specialising in food policy, food security, food product development, food science, and the politics surrounding our food systems. I’m the Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader on the Food and Nutrition BSc and FdSc courses here at UCB. In my opinion, a career in the food industry is one of the best out there, and I’m proud to help guide students towards their own unique path into the sector.

My experience spans hospitality, food factories, and food education, with much of my background rooted in food safety, catering, nutrition, and teaching food and developing curriculum at secondary school level. This practical industry experience allows me to design modules around real-world scenarios and break down complex topics into straightforward, manageable components. I’m currently studying for an MSc in Food Policy, working on deepening my own knowledge of this fascinating field.

I believe it’s crucial for students to recognise that food isn’t just about cooking; it’s also about nutrition, food safety, product development, food security, packaging, specifications, and the layers of policy and politics that shape what ends up on our plates.

One of the highlights of my work at UCB is seeing students transform into confident, articulate and competent graduates with sharp practical and presentation skills, as well as deep knowledge of the entire food sector. Students often say they find my lessons clear and engaging, and my top tip is to keep your reference guide handy - you’ll use it more than you think!

In my spare time, it may come as no surprise that I enjoy cooking and experimenting with recipes. I’m also a bit of a genealogy enthusiast and have traced my family tree back to the 12th Century. Finally, I love to unwind with a good TV series - I can highly recommend Twin Peaks
