"I adopt a practical approach in class, drawing on real examples from coaching, community sport and personal training to show my students how skills are used in practice."

With expertise in sports coaching and personal training, I teach our Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training.

My background includes running a sports coaching company, delivering sessions in both mainstream and behavioural settings and running community projects and holiday clubs. A 15‑year interest in the gym led me to specialise in designing and delivering gym and personal training courses when I moved into teaching.

My industry experience helps me prepare students more effectively for a career in the fitness industry or for progression into higher education. I adopt a practical approach in class, drawing on real examples from coaching, community sport and personal training to show how skills are used in practice. I’m also fortunate in being able to tap into my industry connections to further support my students.

I’m most inspired by the fast pace at which the sport and fitness industry evolves, and by the different ways students put the same qualification to use in their careers. I’m proud whenever I hear from former students who were inspired by my teaching and have gone on to be successful in their chosen field. Many people don’t appreciate the considerable time and effort it takes to succeed as a personal trainer and build a sustainable client base.

My advice to students starting at UCB is to be open‑minded about what their future might hold and to commit fully to fulfilling their potential.

Outside of work, I’m a season ticket holder at Shrewsbury Town and regularly show up to support my team. Fitness is also a big part of my spare time - I go to the gym four times a week. When I’m not watching sports or down at the gym, I like to relax with some TV - Gavin and Stacey is a favourite of mine.
