"I’ve worked with both children and adults, supported individuals with learning disabilities and mental illnesses, volunteered in my local communities, worked as an NHS responder, and also with Roshni Birmingham - an organisation supporting people affected by domestic abuse."

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with children and adults in Early Years, primary and secondary education, and supported individuals with learning disabilities and mental illnesses. I’ve volunteered in my local communities to promote health and wellbeing, and worked as an NHS responder supporting vulnerable adults post-hospitalisation - this was particularly challenging and inspiring during the Covid-19 outbreak. My involvement with Roshni Birmingham - an organisation supporting people affected by domestic abuse, forced marriages, and honour-based abuse - has taught me the importance of safeguarding and advocacy. As an Expert by Experience, I work closely with my colleagues in Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Dietetics to help create an inclusive curriculum at UCB.
I’m inspired by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives through education and care. Not many people realise that health and social care is not only about hands-on support or residential work; the field is incredibly broad, covering policy, mental health advocacy, public health, education, and leadership.
Students often describe my classes as supportive, inclusive, and interactive. Having worked as a Student Engagement Officer and mentor, I’m quick to spot when a student might be struggling and offer support in a non-judgmental way. I encourage my students to make the most of every opportunity at university, and never hesitate to ask for support. I’m proud of the positive impact I’ve had on students’ development and confidence, particularly those who may have doubted their academic potential at first. Watching learners grow in both skill and self-belief, and seeing them go on to land roles within the industry, is incredibly rewarding.
Outside of work, a fun fact about me is that I was a contestant on BBC’s The Great British Sewing Bee (season 7). I also enjoy cycling and gardening, and I’m a keen reader. As well as English, I speak Urdu, Punjabi, Mirpuri, Hindi, and I know a bit of British Sign Language.
