Top cardiologist and expert in keyhole heart surgery made Honorary Fellow

A top cardiologist who has saved countless lives as an expert in keyhole heart surgery has been made an Honorary Fellow of University College Birmingham.

Dr Sagar Doshi, consultant cardiologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, received the honour at the University’s graduation ceremonies at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on Friday September 20.

The esteemed cardiologist is nationally and internationally-recognised as a leading light in minimally invasive structural heart interventions for aortic stenosis or narrowed heart valves as an alternative to open heart surgery, which is reserved for those at high risk.

He instigated and has led the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Intervention (TAVI) programme at the QE hospital since 2008 and has trained physicians across Europe, the British Isles, North America and Japan.

Dr Doshi graduated from the University of Wales Medical School in 1990 and undertook an intercalated Bachelor of Science in anatomy. After joining the Royal College of Physicians, he chose to specialise in cardiology and joined the West Midlands Specialist Training scheme in 1994.

He was awarded a prestigious British Heart Foundation Research scholarship in 1999 and undertook his medical doctorate in vascular biology at the Welsh Heart Research Institute.

He then completed his cardiology training by undertaking a Fellowship in interventional cardiology at the world-famous Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, USA.

He is an active researcher and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in high impact journals. Alongside this, he is an Honorary Associate and Clinical Professor at the University of Birmingham and joined University College Birmingham as an Honorary Professor.

Michael Harkin, Vice-Chancellor at University College Birmingham, said: “Dr Doshi is a passionate educator and has run postgraduate courses in intracoronary imaging, rotational atherectomy, transseptal puncture, alternative access for TAVI and advanced mechanical support.

"At the University, he has imparted his knowledge and wisdom with students and lecturers within our health and nursing departments and we are privileged to be able to award him an Honorary Professorship and Fellowship.”
