One foundation and two undergraduate tourism degrees at University College Birmingham have been recognised by the Tourism Management Institute’s Scheme for Courses in Higher Education. 

Dr Cathy Guthrie, Honorary Secretary for the Tourism Management Institute, highlighted the success of UCB’s undergraduate courses: FdA International Tourism Business Management, BA (Hons) International Tourism Business Management and BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management. 

Michelle Callanan, UCB’s Assistant Dean for Tourism and Aviation, said the University had enjoyed a strong relationship with the institute for a number of years.  

"We are delighted to have contributed to the recent changes made by the Tourism Management Institute in recognising foundation degrees and to be the first university in the UK to formally receive this recognition for our FdA International Tourism Business Management course. UCB has a long history in delivering successful tourism courses and is committed to developing creative work-based learning that meets the needs of industry and professional bodies as well as our students."

The University hosted the institute’s Hot Topic Event, which is part of its Annual Convention. This year’s topic was titled Digital Destinations Masterclass and delegates discussed e-marketing and social media in tourism destinations. 

"This Hot Topic Event was a great experience and a chance for us to demonstrate the cutting edge of smart tourism and receive feedback from other organisations. We are hoping to open a new paradigm of tourism to see the sector through to the future."

UCB tourism lecturers Paul Bamber and Kathryn Bell also gave a presentation examining social media best practice in the tourism industry.
