Tourism Student wins Prestigious National Award

Tourism Business Management student Anete Pieĉa has been announced as the first winner of the Tourism Management Institute David Hughes Memorial Award.

The Award celebrates the dedication and achievements of outstanding tourism students and was established as a tribute to the former president of the Tourism Management Institute, the late David Hughes.

Anete, 24, and from Latvia, impressed judges with both her passion for the tourism industry and the glowing reference she received following her successful work placement with Alpine Elements, working as a Chalet Supervisor in Austria.

David Hughes was a great believer in encouraging young people into a career in tourism to secure the future of the sector. Lecturers at UCB are very proud of Anete and say that she has great business skills and inspires others with her enthusiasm. She is indeed a very fitting first winner of this new Award.

After graduating next year, Anete plans to return to work in Austria. She says: “Tourism destination management is my particular passion and winning the Award will help me show other students how diverse a career in tourism can be. I am delighted to win the award and thank the Institute for their support.”

As part of the Award Anete wins free membership of the Tourism Management Institute for a year and the opportunity to do a presentation about her work experience at one of their professional networking events.

Anete was presented with her Award at the Institute’s annual Hot Topic Event which was held in Birmingham on Wednesday 22 May 2013.
