Nurses' Day Spotlight – Mandeep Lally

As the backbone of our healthcare systems globally, nurses deserve more recognition for the difference they make to lives every single day.

For Nurses' Day this year, we’re highlighting one of our incredible nursing apprenticeships lecturers, Mandeep Lally, who features as one of 75 incredible women in the book 75 Years, 75 Women, 75 Words. The book celebrates 75 years of India’s independence and features extraordinary women who are flourishing in both India and in the UK.

Conceived by the Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett, the book is an initiative of the The British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh, which represents the UK Government in Chandigarh. Among those featured are artists, politicians, entrepreneurs, activists and educators.

Mandeep’s profile in the book explores her roots, from being born in England to studying in India and back again in her adult years. It also discusses her work as a nurse in hospital wards and passion for driving change within the community.

"As a nurse I have had the opportunity to not just be a part of, but witness so many patients’ lives change through the passion and care provided by nurses each and every day," said Mandeep.

"Nursing is not just another profession, it’s a passion, one that is instilled in every individual nurse, a humbling and compassionate job that is ever so rewarding."

“Here at University College Birmingham, I have the opportunity to share my knowledge, skills and experience with the future generation of nurses: to inspire them to be the best they can be and empower them to aim high and aspire to be our future nurse leaders of the healthcare industry."

Nurses' Day is also the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth and Mandeep is coincidentally a Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar and alumni. She will attend the Florence Nightingale Foundation Student Day next week, taking part in the Expert Leadership group before attending the Westminster Abbey Commemoration Service for Florence Nightingale. The service features a procession of the Lamp, which Mandeep was also part of in 2022.

In addition, as Director of British Sikh Nurses, Mandeep works with community groups and Sikh temples, providing free health clinics as well as bystander CPR training sessions across the country.
