University College Birmingham students got a glimpse of how they could be part of one of the world's most inspiring sporting events at this year's Inspire Conference.

A standout session came from Group Captain Jules Merrison, Director of Impact for Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, who spoke about opportunities for students to volunteer when the event comes to the city next year.

Founded by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, the Invictus Games brings together wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from around the world, using the power of sport to support recovery, rehabilitation and resilience.

More than 70 students from across the Department of Hospitality and Tourism heard how volunteering could help them gain valuable experience, develop new skills, build professional networks and play a role in an event that celebrates courage, determination and the strength of the human spirit.

Held as part of WelcomeFest, the Inspire Conference connected students with employers, industry experts and successful graduates, giving them an insight into the opportunities available across tourism, hospitality, events and business.

The day began with a welcome from David Paulson, Executive Dean of the Business School, alongside a showcase of graduate success stories demonstrating the exciting career possibilities a UCB education can unlock.

Students then heard from Martin Clarke, Senior Tourism Marketing Manager at the West Midlands Growth Company, who highlighted the growing opportunities being created by the region's thriving visitor economy.

From the continued impact of Peaky Blinders to the growth of film production in Birmingham, Martin explored how major events and cultural attractions are helping to boost the city's profile and create career opportunities for future graduates.

He also launched an interactive challenge linked to International Birmingham Day, encouraging students to explore and celebrate the city throughout the week.

The conference also shone a spotlight on former students who have gone on to build successful careers of their own.

Conrad Brunton, Managing Director of hospitality recruitment specialist Tonic Talent, shared his journey from student to business owner, while offering practical advice on securing opportunities in the hospitality sector and standing out to employers.

A panel discussion moderated by Katie Bickley brought together Conrad, fellow graduate Munerrah Dubidat, founder of J'Adore Consultancy, and Matt Alexander, Operations and Engagement Manager for Jewellery Quarter BID.

Together, they shared honest insights into the realities of working in the industry, discussed the skills employers are looking for and encouraged students to make the most of every opportunity available to them. Matt also highlighted the strength of UCB talent, revealing that his organisation currently employs two graduates and one current student.

The conference closed with senior lecturer for tourism Paul Bamber challenging students to turn inspiration into action and start thinking about the experiences, opportunities and connections that could help shape their future careers.

"This was an excellent opportunity for students to see where they could go and explore opportunities to help them gain experience," he said.
