Experience what it's like studying on our courses

Our Birmingham College of Food department run Saturday Academies allow you to experience what it’s like studying bakery or chef courses at University College Birmingham. This gives you an opportunity to explore whether working in this industry is your ultimate career goal plus providing you with not only practical skills but other valuable skills such as confidence, communication and teamwork.

Young Bakers Academy

Students are taught how to prepare and cook a range of bread products, desserts and pastries plus take home all products they make. At the end of the course (the final Saturday), the students prepare afternoon tea for parents and invited guests and also receive a certificate. Uniforms are provided, but we ask all students to wear suitable shoes – i.e. rubber-soled shoes with a good grip.

Young Chefs Academy

The Young Chefs Academy is sponsored by the Savoy Educational Trust and The British Culinary Federation and administered by University College Birmingham. Students are taught how to prepare and cook a range of starters, main courses, sweets and puddings plus take home any products they make. At the end of the course (the final Saturday), the students prepare afternoon tea for parents and invited guests and also receive a certificate. Uniforms and knives are provided, but all students must wear suitable shoes – i.e. rubber-soled shoes with a good grip.
