Course overview

This course is designed to enhance the academic and professional profile of practicing teachers, trainers and graduates working in a range of learning and teaching-related disciplines and situations, including community-based settings and formal and informal education.

You will further develop your advanced skillset and learn how to efficiently deal with complex issues that may arise in the learning environment. You will also hone your analytical skills, evaluating research and studies surrounding education, learning and curriculum. 

The opportunity to undertake detailed exploration of education and learning-related issues is provided, enabling you to apply what you have learned to practice in the workplace and to support field research. 

If you have a PGCE with 60 credits, you can use these credits towards the course, meaning you could complete the course in 18 months (part-time).

Teaching & Assessment (NV)

Teaching and assessment

Full-time route

Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers and a typical teaching week will have up to 8 teaching contact hours and additional optional hours if students take up career-enhancing opportunities offered by UCB.

  • Large group teaching - 4 hours of lectures in lecture rooms
  • Smaller group teaching - 2 hours of teaching in smaller groups and discussing topics relevant to the module
  • Tutorials - 2 hours of tutorials (involving personal, group and academic sessions each week)

Classes take place in the afternoon and evenings.

Individual Study

In addition, you are expected to commit to approximately 20 hours a week of your own study time in preparation for teaching sessions and preparing for and completing assessment. UCB Online provides a 24-hour access to learning and support material.

Part-time route 

Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers. Delivery will be through a range of methods including lectures, student-led seminars and tutorials. There will be a class exercise to facilitate deeper comprehension of analysis, which is required for postgraduate study. In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 4 teaching contact hours, made up as follows:

  • Smaller group teaching - 3 hours of lectures in lecture rooms
  • Tutorials - 1 hours including a mixture of personal, group and academic tutorials per week

Classes take place in the afternoon and evenings.

Individual Study

In addition, you are expected to commit approximately 10 hours a week of your own study time in preparation for teaching sessions and preparing for and completing assessment. UCB Online provides a 24-hour access to learning and support material.


The following assessment criteria applies to both the full and part-time route and is designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths in a number of ways and so a variety of assessment methods are used. Assignments are typically based around your professional practice within your vocational area, enabling you to demonstrate your initiative, self-direction and appraise your decision-making within your workplace/placement setting.

An estimated breakdown of the assessment for this course is as follows:

  • Coursework 80%
  • Practical Assessment 20%

Entry Requirements (NV)

Entry requirements


  • MA/MSc - A grade classification of 2:2 is required or international equivalent
  • PGDip - A grade classification of third-class is required or international equivalent
  • A subject related UK or International honours degree from a recognised institution


  • We also consider applicants who are currently employed and wish to apply to UCB.
  • To apply, you must have 5 years of relevant managerial work experience, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the sector for the subject matter you are interested in pursuing.
  • A reference detailing your roles and responsibilities from your line manager and a meeting with the programme team will usually be scheduled prior to a place being offered.

EU/international students:

Course Requirement

Ideally, you should be currently in relevant employment or voluntary work for a minimum of 8 hours per week. All students are required to complete an overall minimum requirement of 175 hours across two semesters. The Hired@UCB team will support successful applicants who are not able to secure an appropriate role during enrolment.


Students must also complete a  Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) before starting this course. UCB will co-ordinate and fund the completion of the DBS check. All students must follow UCB’s Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practice.
