Meet the new Guild of Students executive team
Meet the new executive team at University College Birmingham's Guild of Students for the 2019-20 academic year!
The team of four was chosen after a record turnout in the Guild elections in April, with 1,679 votes cast – more than double the turnout of previous years.
The Guild team will again be led by Ross Loveitt, who was re-elected as President having served in the role during the 2018-19 academic year.
He will be joined by three new faces: Vice President Alpha Jallow, Student Communities Officer Ashlea Mallett and Diversity Officer Paula Couto.
The new Guild Executive Team will take office on 1 July, with the current team in place until then.
Find out more about the new team and what they had to say about their new roles:
President – full-time
"Our main goal is to help establish the UCB community and spread the message that everyone is here to help the students make the most of their time at the University. We want to represent the students and make sure they all feel safe, that they can come to us with any problem and speak to us independent of the University.
"I think we're a really strong team, all focused in different areas. The whole aim is to build a really strong community.
"UCB is about 'Service before Self' and that's what we all embody. We talk about developing student leadership and I think that's what the Guild does offer to students."
Vice President – full-time
"I'm really excited, I can't wait. I've been a student representative and postgraduate officer for the past few years, so I'm looking forward to this role.
"I'm looking forward to building a strong student network and a strong student rep system. Those are the main priorities for me.
"The Guild is here to help, there are big changes coming up, and hopefully we'll be one of the best Guild teams we've ever seen here!"
Student Communities Officer - volunteer
"I'll be looking after the societies, from sports to international, and making sure everyone has a place to go where they feel safe and happy with their experience at UCB, inside the University and outside.
"I feel really good about it. I think the team is going to do a lot next year and even over the summer."
Diversity Officer - volunteer
"I want to help the students, give them the support they need and let them know they are welcome – for the international and Erasmus students, they're not the only one living abroad at the University.
"I think we can do a lot of things. If we stay positive with the ideas in our heads, we can do it!"
