UCB's Nitisha signs contract for first cookery book
Professional chef and former UCB student Nitisha Patel is preparing for the launch of her first cookery book.
The 27-year-old, who has already tasted success as the face of Indian cuisine in Tesco stores nationwide, is working with London-publishers Ryland Peters and Small to produce My Modern Indian Kitchen.
Packed with foolproof recipes which can be created at home with minimum fuss, the book is inspired by the food she enjoyed at home in Wolverhampton with her Gujarati parents and informed by the training she received on UCB’s Culinary Arts Management (CAM) course.
Nitisha studied at the Summer Row campus in Birmingham city centre between 2006 and 2010. The former Highfields School pupil said: “I was studying Food Technology at A level. I visited UCB and was blown away by the facilities. The whole experience at UCB proved to be really good for me. I wouldn’t have had half the opportunities I’ve enjoyed without the help of the lecturers.”
Within months of graduating Nitisha was working as head chef at leading housing and care provider Midland Heart, overseeing catering in their kitchen, restaurant and coffee shop. She’s gone on to create recipes for Tesco’s Indian Meal range, and develop new products for Noon, one of the leading suppliers of oriental and Indian prepared food in the retail sector.
Nitisha is currently working as a product manager overseeing pre-prepared poultry dishes for Asda stores across the country.
My Modern Indian Kitchen has been a labour of love, put together in Nitisha’s spare time over two years. She said it reflects her love of food and her heritage. She added: “It is all about Indian food that is great tasting, fresh, vibrant, and guaranteed to leave your friends and family impressed too.
“There are a variety of recipes; some are shockingly simple, some are all about slow cooking and some are quite extravagant. My book demonstrates authentic meals with a modern twist, most of which won’t take as long as a curry, but will still deliver the same flavour punches and fun, impressive meal experiences.”
UCB’s CAM course has produced numerous notable alumni including Ben Ebbrell, co-founder of SORTEDfood – one of the world’s biggest online cookery channels with 1.5 million subscribers.
My Modern Indian Kitchen is due for release in March 2017.
