I have over 15 years of teaching experience in the Higher Education sector and am currently the Dean of the Business School at University College Birmingham (UCB). My academic career commenced with my appointment as a Business & Marketing Lecturer in 1999, I progressed to middle management in 2012 as Associate Dean of the Business School and in 2015, later became the Dean of School. In addition to overseeing the strategic management of the Business School at UCB, I am also a member of the Curriculum Quality Committee and Professional Development Committee.

My previous appointments have included Retail Manager for a leading supermarket in the UK and International Marketing Manager for a multinational confectionary organisation where I was based in the south of France for two years. The move into teaching and the Higher Education sector came as a result of wanting to combine my academic knowledge with my industry experience and as such I successfully completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. I completed my BSc. (Hons) in International Business Management (with French), and MSc. specialising in Marketing Management, at Aston University. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute. Dilshad was recently appointed as the Regional Chair (West Midlands Board) for the Chartered Management Institute and is also fluent in several languages.

Being the only female Asian Dean of a Business School in the country, my most recent research interests have focused on the diversity in leadership and management across the Higher Education sector. I have delivered several keynote presentations both locally and nationally advocating the benefits of a diverse leadership and management team. I am a mentor for the 30% Club and continue to engage with audiences across a variety of sectors in my endeavours to encourage more females, especially from minority ethnic backgrounds, attaining senior leadership roles.

I lecture in a variety of final year undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Marketing which include, Brand Management, Strategic Marketing Management, International Marketing, Advertising & Media Management, Digital & Social Media Marketing, Marketing Planning & Operations and Strategic Brand Management.

Research interests and scholarly activity

My most recent research interests have centred around the impact and influence of Digital and Social Media platforms on the marketing landscape and as a result on the activities of organisations. I have a particular interest in the use and impact of user generated content on a firm's brand and how organisations attempt to measure and control such influences. From a teaching and learning perspective, I have a keen interest in developing existing and new curriculum that reflects the changing business environment and work place demands.

External engagements

I have acted as an external advisor on the Validation and Approvals Committee for new programme introductions, working with a variety of Higher Education Institutions across the sector.

Other activities

I am currently a mentor for the 30% club, coaching females from a variety of sectors who are aspiring to attain leadership roles within their organisations. I am also a keynote speaker for the Leadership Foundation in Higher Education, engaging audiences in discussions about the need for diversity in management and leadership.
