Our Governance and Management

The University is a legally independent organisation, which is also an exempt charity. It initially became a Further Education Corporation in 1992 and then a Higher Education Corporation in 2002. The University gained Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2007, changed its name in 2008 and gained full University status in 2012.

The University is governed in accordance with its Instrument and Articles of Government, which are the legal documents that determine the basis for its operation. These were approved by the Privy Council in 2002 and amended, with their approval, in 2007, 2008 and 2012.

The Corporation is the University’s governing body, responsible for setting its strategic direction and policies governing all aspects of the University's activity, and for the University's finances and assets.

The Academic Board is the highest academic body, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and responsible to the Corporation. It is responsible for the University's academic policies and for regulating academic work and standards.

The Executive Management Team (EMT) is the University's senior management team responsible for steering and implementing University strategy and policy. The Vice-Chancellor chairs the EMT and serves as the Chief Executive of the University. He is responsible to and appointed by the Corporation and is also the University's Designated Officer, accountable to the Office for Students.
