Tourism students sent to the dungeons

UCB students have come face-to-face with sinister characters from York’s gruesome past, including traitorous plotter Guy Fawkes and the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin.

This was part of a two-day residential visit for BTEC National Diploma for Tourism students, where they went to the York Dungeon, had a tour of York Minster, and also participated in a ‘ghost tour’ in the evening.

The purpose of the visit was to focus on course modules such as Visitor Attractions and how techniques are used by live actors in order to make attractions such as the York Dungeon a popular tourist spot. Students also saw first-hand how tour guides conducted themselves and engaged with their visitor groups to ensure that the experience was memorable.

Students Tayba Khan and Aleksandra Maslobojeva said, “It was a great experience, the York Dungeon was very interesting and the animators there were brilliant – they never broke character and were excellent storytellers. We also learnt so much from the York Minster tour, looking at famous landmarks and hearing all about the history of York – it made for some great pictures!”
