Kris Delaney, BA (Hons) Specialist Hair and Media Make-up student, is absolutely made up after clinching her third work placement with an industry professional since starting at UCB.

From the glamorous and gory to trendy and tribal, you only have to take a look at the Level  5 student’s diverse portfolio of work to see why she has been accepted to join the make-up specialist when they are next in Birmingham.

Spotted at the iconic Hair and Beauty Show in London, where she was exhibiting, Kris is now a shining example of how other students can get their career rolling in the right direction, attributing her continued success to “hard work, a good attitude and plenty of confidence.

Apply yourself

Since starting at UCB, Kris has gained a staggering amount of industry experience through the University’s professional placements.

“They have taught me so much, from how to work with a huge range of products to adapting to endless different environments,” said Kris, who follows in the footsteps of her mum, who is a hairdresser, and Instagrammers Makeup by Shayla and Faced by Feyi.

“I would say the key to being selected to gain this kind of real life experience yourself is, first, to show a high level of commitment and enthusiasm, and, second, never to be afraid of approaching people to model  for you.

“From my experience, you really need to try and get on as many placements as possible and don’t leave coursework to the last minute.”

Laying foundations

No shrinking violet, Kris has recently started collaborating with a student photographer and other make-up artists to produce more portfolio work, which they all can use in the future to propel them up the career ladder.

“I plan to continue working with my collaborative creative team to refine their skills and portfolios ready to impress even more employers after graduation,” she said.

“It’s important to constantly stay one step ahead of yourself and look at ways to really make an impact.”
