Nigel moss web

Nigel Moss, Chancellor and Chair of Governors 

In addition to chairing the University’s Board of Governors, Nigel also chairs the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

Following an early career in local authority administration, Nigel moved to Birmingham in 1975 as part of the launch team for the new National Exhibition Centre.  There he specialised in health and safety as well as supervising management skills and staff development.  Later in his career, Nigel managed the activities of the Student Unions at two Universities.  For 5 years prior to his retirement in 2009 Nigel taught and supported young adults with specific learning needs at the Glasshouse project in Stourbridge.

Nigel is immensely proud that both he and members of his own family have been students at UCB.

Lorraine Teague web

Lorraine Teague 

Lorraine is the Deputy Chair of the Governing Body and sits on the Finance and General Purposes and Remuneration and Nominations Committees.

A solicitor by vocation, she was, for many years, UCB’s employment law advisor in her role as a partner with one of Birmingham’s leading law firms.  A few years ago, Lorraine decided to step back from the daily grind of a commercial legal practice and instead, focus on those areas of her professional life from which she derived most satisfaction.  She now works part-time for a national legal practice, working directly with clients and is the Vice-Chair of her local Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Lorraine also took the opportunity to put herself forward as a potential member of the Board of Governors; an offer that was quickly accepted by the other Board members.  She became Deputy Chair of the Board in August 2017.

Andreas Antona web

Dr Andreas Antona 

Michelin starred Chef Andreas chairs the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the Board of Governors and sits on the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. 

Having initially trained at Ealing Technical College, Andreas worked in kitchens in Switzerland and Germany before returning to the UK to work with Anton Mosimann at the Dorchester and Michael Quinn at the Ritz where he met his wife Alison. He spent time as chef de cuisine at the Elms in Abberley before moving to the then renowned Plough and Harrow in Birmingham.  Under Andreas’s guidance the restaurant’s fortunes where revived.  

Desiring more independence, Andreas and Alison opened their first restaurant, Simpsons, in Kenilworth in 1993.  The style of restaurant was based on their ambition for a fine dining establishment and Andreas’ modern French cooking. Endless hours of dedicated hard work led to Simpsons receiving top accolades including a Bib Gourmande in 1995 and a Michelin star in 1999.

In October 2004, he opened the new Simpsons, a 70 cover luxury restaurant in a grade ll listed building in Edgbaston. 

Andreas likes to keep himself busy; in Summer 2013, he took over The Cross, Kenilworth and installed Adam Bennett there as head chef. The Cross was awarded a Michelin star in 2014, within 12 months of its reopening. Weeks later, Andreas was himself awarded the International Chef of the Year award at La Gastronomie et Vins in Lyon, the culinary capital of France. 

In Spring 2014, Andreas teamed up with managing director of Purity Brewing Co. Paul Halsey and former Mitchells and Butlers director, Martin Hilton to open Pure Bar and Kitchen, a craft ale bar serving quality British food, in central Birmingham.

Despite almost 40 years in the industry, Andreas’ enthusiasm for great cooking is as strong as ever.  Thanks to his support, Adam Bennett was able to achieve Team UK’s best result ever when he represented the country in the Bocuse d’Or 2013.

Mike Wiseman web

Michael Wiseman

Michael chairs the Audit Committee as well as sitting on the main Board and the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

He is qualified as a Chartered Accountant and has worked for leading companies such as Touche Ross & Co and the Burroughs Corporation in Europe & Africa.  He is the Managing Director of Haunch Lane Developments Ltd (Property Development & Investment Business). In 2005 he set up Metal Packaging International Ltd (Stockholder of Imported Tins & Aerosols) where he is also the Managing Director and majority shareholder.

He was appointed to the board of directors of Birmingham City Football Club (BCFC PLC) in 1997 and then to the holding company board Birmingham City PLC in 2006. He resigned from both positions in 2011 and then became the Honorary Vice President of the club, a position he holds to this day. 

Christine Owen web

Christine Owen OBE

Christine chairs the Student Services and Standards Committee and is a member of the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. 

Christine was Head teacher of Barley Green School until December 2014. She held the position for 20 years, leading its improvement from failing to being outstanding, a rating maintained over the last eight years of her Headship. Serving a socially disadvantaged community, Bartley Green School was identified by HMCI as one of "Twelve Outstanding Secondary Schools: Excelling against the odds" in 2012. 

Christine Owen was awarded an OBE in 2009 for services to Education, with respect to the support she provided for other less successful schools. Bartley Green was one of the first Teaching Schools in the country. She continues to work with schools in challenging circumstances in Birmingham and is on the School Improvement Commissioning Group for the School Improvement Advisory Board.

Giovanni Di Vito web

Giovanni Di Vito (Staff Governor) 

Gio has been nominated by the University’s Academic Board to serve as Staff Governor on the Governing Body. He is a member of the student Services and Standards Committee.

A Classically trained Chef with over 30 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, Giovanni spent his early days at the Savoy Hotel London and continued to develop his experience working across France, Switzerland and Italy.

A former ‘Young Chef of Great Britain’, three time ‘Midlands Chef of the Year’ and a finalist in the ‘National Chef of the Year’ 1991, Giovanni has always been involved in competition work and continues to mentor student competitors. He has been awarded numerous medals in Salons throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.

Keen to pass on his wealth of knowledge and experience, Gio joined the University as a Chef Lecturer in 1995. Now an Assistant Dean in the College of Food, he oversees the University’s fine dining restaurants. He has also developed a number of educational learning Apps, most notably – ‘Classical Professional Cookery’, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced to support the learning of chef students at UCB.  These Apps are now in demand from a number of the hospitality companies we work with. In 2015 he was presented with the highly regarded Louis Cipolla Award by the British Culinary Federation for his Outstanding contribution to Education. 

Charlotte Gates web

Charlotte Gates (President UCB Guild of Students)

Originally from Grimsby, Charlotte was elected President of the Guild of Students in 2017 and formally took up her post from 1 August. She is a Specialist Hair and Media Makeup graduate who previously served as the Guild’s Welfare, Ethics and Environmental Officer. Other work includes sales, customer service and receptionist duties.

Peter Griffiths web

Peter Griffiths MBE 

Peter, who is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee as well as the main Board, is a former student of the University, having, studied Professional Cookery, HCIMA Management Diploma and a Teaching Instructor Course. In his distinguished catering career, Peter served for over twenty four years as the Director of Le Salon Culinaire International de Londres, Hotelympia and Salon Culinaire, Hospitality, NEC Birmingham and remains the President of the British Culinary Federation.

He has also served as a consultant, organiser and judge at many leading culinary competitions and Salons around the world and received recognition across the industry. Named UK Chef Expert 1992-1995 by UK and World Skills, awarded the Craft Guild of Chefs Special Award 1994, given Honorary membership of Les Toque Blanches Lyonnaises and Le Conseil Culinare Français de Grande Bretagne, he was appointed a Disciple of Escoffier in 2008 by the Association Culinaire Française and awarded an MBE, for services to the Hospitality Industry, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, in June 2008.

Professor Tim Jones (University of Birmingham representative)

Professor Tim Jones joined the University of Birmingham as Provost and Vice-Principal on 1st September 2016. 

As a member of the University of Birmingham’s Executive Board, Tim provides the leadership to deliver the University’s Strategy.  At the operational level he works closely with the Directors of Finance, Human Resources and Planning and the 5 Heads of Colleges in advancing and implementing the annual and three year plans for the University.  At the strategic level he works closely with the Registrar and Secretary as well as the Directors of the Corporate Services to develop and deliver our strategic plan.  In addition, Tim chairs the Capital Programme Management Group, is a member of the Strategy, Planning and Resources Committee, Council, Senate and a range of other University Committees, and is the University's champion for Athena Swan and equality of opportunity initiatives. 

Tim is currently a member of Council at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and a member of the Science Advisory Council for Wales, and was until recently on the Board of the Alan Turing Institute in London.

Vera Lee web

Vera Lee

Vera is a member of the Student Services and Standards Committee as well as the main Board.

She is an independent technical and vocational education and training (TVET) consultant with over 35 years’ experience - specialising in Tourism and Hospitality - in the public and private sectors in UK and overseas. She is a graduate of the Scottish Hotel School, University of Strathclyde, and qualified as a teacher at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow.

She has 25 years’ experience in the Scottish education sector as a lecturer from pre-vocational to first degree level, and as an examiner/moderator for the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). She has provided technical assistance and consultancy services contributing to the reform and modernisation of TVET in developing and transitional economies in Eastern Europe, Asia, East Africa, North Africa and West Africa on European Commission (EC), World Bank (WB) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) projects, initiating institutional development within the framework of overall capacity building.

Vera has wide and varied experience in the private sector overseas as a management adviser to hotel companies, and has developed and implemented competence-based in-house training programmes within a peripatetic work environment.

Ray Linforth

Professor Ray Linforth

Ray Linforth is the Vice-Chancellor & Principal of University College Birmingham.  As well as being a member of the main Board of the Governing Body, he also sits as a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Ray has worked at UCB for 30 years, originally joining the staff of the then Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies as Deputy Principal in January 1988.  In August 2008 be became Principal, following the retirement of Dr Eddie McIntyre.  Ray led the institution to University title in November 2012.

Ray chairs the Education Committee of the royal Academy of Culinary Arts and sits on the Academy’s Management Committee.  He is Chief Executive of the Bocuse d’Or UK Academy and Chair of Governors at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College and a Fellow of The City and Guilds of London Institute.  

Lisa McGinn web

Lisa McGinn

Lisa sits on the Audit Committee as well as the main Board.

After graduating from Queens University Belfast and completing her legal training at Nottingham Law School, Lisa qualified at Anthony Collins in Birmingham and then moved to Browne Jacobson as a Junior Lawyer. She progressed through the ranks and held the role of an Equity Partner in the Commercial Property team. She dealt with a wide range of property matters specialising in sales and acquisitions, commercial and residential developments, work with landlords and tenants and a variety of specialist work in the education sector. In 2017 she joined a private firm based in Solihull, to work as an in-house Legal Director.

James Retallack web

James Retallack

James is a member of the Governing Body’s Audit Committee as well as a member of the main Board.

James is a solicitor who spent twenty years in private practice with Edge & Ellison (now part of Squire Pattern Boggs, a global law firm), where he became Senior Partner. In 2001 he was invited to become Group Resources Director and to join the board of Aggregate Industries plc, a £1bn construction materials producer with quarrying, ready mixed concrete, asphalt, paving and pre-cast concrete operations in the UK, Europe and the US. As an executive director James had responsibility for a range of functions and activities including human resources, legal and professional services, communications, property and risk. Aggregate Industries employed 12,000 people across its areas of operation.

In March 2005 Aggregate Industries was acquired by Holcim Limited, one of the world’s largest cement manufacturers and building materials suppliers. Following the take-over James continued as an executive director and executive committee member of Aggregate Industries Limited until 2011 when he left to concentrate on other business interests. He is Chairman of both Lone Star Land Limited and Chase Commercial Limited and owns a private consultancy business providing advice to businesses on strategy, risk, business development and mergers and acquisitions. 

Yvonne Towe web

Yvonne Towe

After leaving college, Yvonne had initially intended to train as an English Literature teacher at Warwick University, but was inspired to join the West Midlands Police in February 1984 after watching the way the force responded to a challenging period in the City.

She joined the Bradford Street police station for a two year training period before transferring to the Stechford station where she spent fourteen years working in different crime departments, including as the first female officer in the Divisional Observation Team. Yvonne also worked in the CID, Burglary, Vehicle Squad and Robbery teams.

In 1999, she was promoted to the rank of sergeant and placed at Walsall police station where she spent the remainder of her career. She retired from the force in February 2014 after thirty years’ service.

Until mid-2017, Yvonne was the Deputy Chair of the Board of Governors, chair of the Student Services and Standards Committee and a member of the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.  Although remaining a Board member, she stood down from those roles in order to allow other Governors to play more prominent roles.

Scott Winter

Scott Winter

Scott is a member of the University’s Audit Committee as well as sitting on the main Board.

He is the Managing Director of Icca Education Training and Skills.  His experience includes over 20 years FE sector experience, including 18 years in education audit and advisory work and 6 years with the FE funding body where he was responsible for the development of the Funding and Audit Guidance. 

Scott’s areas of expertise include audit, new models of delivery, supporting Colleges in recovery, College mergers, due diligence reviews and helping plan and manage projects and programmes.
