How to apply

Application Procedures for exchange student

Students wishing to study at University College Birmingham as part of an ERASMUS mobility exchange should submit the following paperwork once being nominated by their coordinators:

  • Student Application Form
  • Learning Agreement
  • Housing Request Form
  • European Health Card
  • Passport photos (2)

The submission deadline for applications is:

  • 2nd December 2011 for the second semester
  • June 2012 for the first semester or full academic year

All of these forms must be printed, completed and signed where appropriate. Once completed they should be sent by post to the following address:

Before You Arrive

Getting Ready

The thought of coming to live in a new city, to study in a new Institution and to speak a language which is not your mother tongue, can present a great challenge and in some cases, a certain amount of anxiety before your journey begins.

This need not be so, with the help of these few easy tips, your preparation will ensure your arrival in Birmingham will be trouble free and that your first stage of academic study will run smoothly:

Where will you live?

Consider where you are going to live. Whether you would like to live in the college managed accommodation in modern, city centre surroundings or would prefer private accommodation in the city or surrounding areas we can help you. Please see our Accommodation pages for more information.

Banks

Will you need to open a bank account during your time in Birmingham? If so, talk to the local banks in your area and find out if they have links or agreements with any of the large UK banking institutions. If not, do not worry, you will be given expert advice on how to open an account within a few days of arriving in Birmingham.

Personal Safety

It is important for anyone living abroad to learn the best ways to keep safe in their new country. With this is mind the British Council have compiled a personal safety guide especially for international students. It covers a range of issues; from what to do in an emergency to UK driving regulations. The personal safety guide is designed to make your stay here as pleasant and problem-free as possible. Relax!

You have covered all the main issues you need to consider before arriving in the UK. These simple steps will help your first few days with us to be trouble free. Study Information

An Orientation Programme is available free of charge (you only pay for accommodation) before teaching starts in September and February each year, you are advised to attend the orientation programme to familiarise yourself with University College Birmingham and your new surroundings.  Visit the Orientation Programme pages for more information.

Modules

A choice of modules will be made available to you depending on your course of study at your home institution, a full list of modules available can be downloaded here.

Additional English Classes

Students may enrol at the start of each semester for additional English classes of either one or two hours a week. These classes include skills and practice in grammar, academic and general listening, pronunciation and conversation and also interview techniques .

There is also an opportunity for students to gain additional qualifications with the English Speaking Board and the EDI Written English for Tourism awards.

Workshops are also held throughout the week for individual support on academic work.

Language Support

Language Support is a free proof reading service offered to students who do not speak English as their first language and who are attending or have attended additional English classes. This ensures that students produce the professional standards of written English required by their courses. Additional support is also available on structuring written work, referencing, academic writing style, CV writing and job applications.

The Open Access Centre

The Open Access Centre is available for students to gain additional experience of English and the Hospitality and Tourism industries of the UK with the use of the Sanako language lab, digital materials and satellite television.

Please remember that English classes don’t carry any European Credits.
