EMA and ALG

The following funding is available to students studying on Further Education courses only:

Educational Maintenance Allowance

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) scheme was set up with the aim of encouraging more post-16 students from low-income households to remain in education beyond Year 11. The allowance can be spent on anything the student wishes but is intended to help with the day-to-day costs incurred when staying on at school/college.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week depending on a student's household income. The allowance is available to learners aged between 16 and 19, who are resident in England and studying any full-time Further Education course .

Please visit the EMA website for more details.

Adult Learning Grant

The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) offers financial help for those doing full-time Further Education courses, who do not qualify for EMA.

The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 per week, depending on the student's income. The grant is available to learners aged 19 or over, who are resident in England and studying full time for a first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 qualification. ALG cannot be claimed if a student is enrolled on a Level 1 course .
