EMA and the new 16-19 Bursary Scheme
UCB is now in a position to give more details about the schemes that will be on offer for the 2011/12 academic year to financially support Further Education students in their studies.
There are two key components to the new scheme:
-
EMA Transition Scheme (2011/12 Academic Year only for progressing students)
Those students who are currently eligible for assistance through EMA and are progressing to the next stage of their programme of study may be eligible to receive payments through the 2011/12 academic year.
Those students who had the original 3-year EMA Guarantee (from 2009/2010) will receive the same level of support, whilst those entering their second year of study and receiving £30 per week last year will only be entitled to £20 per week this year. Students who last year received £20 or £10 per week will not be entitled to any financial assistance under the EMA transitional scheme. See the EMA Transition Scheme Guidance Document for more information.

The UCB FE 16-19 Bursary Scheme (only for new applicants) is split into 3 main categories:
‘Mandatory’ Bursary Administered solely by the Student Services Department - those students aged between 16 and 19 who are identified as vulnerable (i.e. children in care, care leavers, those on income support or with children of their own etc.) will receive a guaranteed Bursary of £1200 per academic year. Payments will be made on a weekly basis and are subject to satisfactory general attendance and behaviour criteria.
‘Discretionary’ Bursary Scheme (DBS) Administered by the EMA Team, in liaison with the Student Services Department - those students whose household income is less than £20,817 per annum and who satisfy strict attendance and behaviour criteria may be eligible for Bursary payments of £20 per week up to a value of £720 over the academic year. Please contact the EMA team on 0121 232 4179 or see the DBS Student Guidance Document for further information about the scheme.
‘Hardship’ Bursary Administered solely by the Student Services Department - those students whose income falls between £20,817 and £30,810 are eligible to apply for specific 'hardship' support, although the provision of actual support, or its level, cannot be guaranteed.
PLEASE NOTE All financial support given under the new Bursary Scheme is to support students in their studies at UCB (e.g to cover travel costs and basic course materials etc.) this is the first year that the scheme has been in operation and how it will be presented in subsequent years cannot be guaranteed at this stage.
