Helen Evans
BA (Hons) Culinary Arts Management
Greatest Bachelors Student Contribution to UCB
Helen Evans has a true passion for cooking and the world of food and at just 24, she has an impressive list of achievements to her name already which is why she has won the award for the Greatest Bachelors Student Contribution to UCB.
After four years, Helen completed her BA(Hons) Culinary Arts Management in July this year and literally a month later was delighted to be offered the job as cookery school tutor at the Michelin restaurant Simpsons in Birmingham.
Helen was already an established member of the team at Simpsons as she held a part time job and did her placement year there. She watched the cookery school flourish and thought it would be a long time off before she could be considered to run it, so news of the job offer was a very proud moment!
Whilst at UCB, alongside her studies Helen took part in many culinary competitions winning individual and team titles including British Culinary Federation Young Chef of the Year and Delice Network’s Rising Star of the Year.
For her final year research project she took an in depth look at the emotive ingredient Foie Gras, focussing on the traditional and ethical methods of production in France and the USA. Such was her interest in the subject, that she organised a trip to France recently to spend time on a foie gras producing farm to see for herself what was involved.
She was heartened to find how much respect and affection the farmers had for the ducks and appreciated the high standards of care given to the birds during their lifetime. Now she can pass on this and all her experiences to cookery school participants.
The future looks incredibly bright for Helen and everyone wishes her all the best for a long and successful career.
Helen’s prize: £200 of vouchers kindly donated by D&D London.
