Specialist Hair and Media Make-up BA (Hons)

I studied Level 3 Theatrical Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up at UCB and enjoyed it, so I wanted to stay at the university and develop my skills at degree level.

What I loved about this course is that you’re not limited to one area of specialism – you can explore lots of different avenues in your first and second year which can then be tailored to your personal preferences in third year. The course isn’t easy, though – you need to have the drive and passion that it takes to succeed in the industry.

I was involved with numerous placements during my time at UCB. Some of my favourites were providing special effects makeup for Fire Service training days, working as part of the backstage team at the NEC Photography Show and being part of the Hair and Makeup team for an Alice in Wonderland event at the REP theatre.

I would recommend UCB to anyone who wants to further their careers within the industry. The facilities at UCB are outstanding and the staff are all industry professionals with great knowledge and experience.

Currently I am establishing myself as a Freelance Make-up Artist and Creative Director. My interest lies within the Fashion industry and I often work alongside creative teams producing imagery for photo shoots. I have worked with numerous fashion brands on advert campaigns and have also been lucky enough to work with some celebrity clientele. I am in the processes of launching my own Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle magazine with a small creative team based in Birmingham.

I love my job because each day is different. One day I could be working on a high fashion advert campaign and the next day it could be a beauty shoot – the variety keeps me engaged and focused. It’s hard for me, as a creative person, to stick to a structured routine. I like each day to be different and a challenge.
