If you are already pursuing a career working with children, this course will help to enhance your qualifications. The early years sector is rapidly diversifying and there is a growing need for highly-trained staff who are knowledgeable, flexible and adaptable.
This FdA in Professional Studies in Childhood provides you with a high level of academic knowledge and enhanced practical skills in the development and education of young children. It also concentrates on helping you develop important management skills with children. Success in this field requires an in-depth understanding of children’s social, physical, emotional and intellectual needs.
You will also look at provision, which must be planned against a background of changing legislation and fluctuating trends in public opinion. In addition, you will develop appropriate management skills in order to be able to plan strategies within the constraints of each organisation.
Duration of the course
You will complete this course over 2.5 years part-time by taking one session per week on a Tuesday (1pm – 7pm) or Wednesday (3pm – 9pm).

Teaching & assessment
Part-time students attend one afternoon/early evening per week. Teaching is carried out by appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers and a typical teaching week will have up to 6 teaching contact hours made up as follows:
- Large group teaching - 4 hours of lectures in lecture rooms
- Small group teaching - 1 hour in small groups discussing topics presented in lectures
- Tutorials - 1 hour including a mixture of personal, group and academic tutorials per week
This is a work-based vocational programme and students are advisedto commit 10 hours a week of your own study time in preparation for teaching sessions and preparing for and completing assessment. UCB Online provides a 24 hour access to learning and support material.
There is a strong focus on the vocational nature of this course including live project work and group assessment. The modes of assessment are varied and include essays/reports, portfolio building, presentations, opportunities for research, the production of a creative resource and a training manual.

Childhood Studies FdA
A Level 3 qualification such as a NNEB, BTEC ND or DCE.
You must be working in an appropriate childcare environment for 8-10 hours per week (paid or unpaid).
A letter of support will also be required from your line manager.

Upon successful completion FdA students will have the option of progressing onto the final year of the BA (Hons).

It is expected that you are already employed, or volunteering, and are able to use your place of work to complete your practical assessments. You will need a letter of support from your line manager to confirm your suitability for the course and that your workplace is in full agreement for you to attend and undertake assessment.
