I decided to study for my postgraduate qualification at UCB because I have studied at the university previously and really enjoyed it. I believe that knowledge is power, and the quality of the teaching and the level of discussions between students in seminars are excellent.

I’m currently working as a mentoring intern at UCB, helping to provide extra support to the UCB student body at all levels whilst studying for my masters. Whilst studying, I am also spending my time teaching adults and guest speaking.

I love working in this industry because it is so diverse. I have had experience working in children centres, working in family support and setting up my own support programmes in speech and language and parent support. I love working with people and the variety of my experience has given me plenty of confidence.

If I were to give advice to a student considering taking this course, I would say that more education definitely helps you. There are some great modules to study at UCB, such as Communications in Practice, which is about supporting your colleagues and reflecting on your experience. It opens your mind and gives you the self-confidence you need to really make a difference – I would definitely recommend it, I’ve had an incredible journey at UCB.

With regards to careers advice I would say that, in this industry, you have to take every individual you meet as they come. When you first meet them, you don’t know their journey and what they’ve been through – all you can do is support them, be aware of their culture and communicate effectively.
