English Development Centre

The English Development Centre at UCB offers both pre-sessional English courses if you are a prospective student and in-sessional support whilst you here. If you do not speak English as your first language, you can take advantage of both our English Development Sessions and English Language Support.

English Development Sessions

You may enrol at the start of each semester for English Development Sessions. These free sessions include academic writing skills, academic reading skills, grammar for academic writing and listening skills for lectures. All sessions run for five weeks.

You can also enrol in Exploring Culture sessions, which cover aspects of British culture as diverse as food, humour, national identity, industry, literature and politics. These sessions also offer a chance to improve your speaking and listening skills.

Subject Advice Sessions run regularly throughout each semester. You do not need to enrol and can use these as “drop-in” sessions if you have a question about your writing or if you need support for other assignments.

English language support

Language support is a free-proof reading service offered to students who do not speak English as their first language. This ensures you produce the professional standards of written English required by your course.

English language courses

The English Development Centre run 10-week and 6-week Pre-Sessional English Courses during the summer for students starting programmes in September, as well as longer Intensive English Courses with start dates in September and February. Further details can be found on our English courses overview page.
