Overview

There is strong demand for caring, skilled individuals to work with young children in a variety of settings, from playgroups and nurseries to schools.

The course is suitable for those wanting to work with children from birth to five years old. It will provide you with a licence to practice and the status of Early Years Educator. 

Completing our Level 3 Diploma will show you have been trained to the highest standards and are equipped with the best early years training available.

Why maths and English are so important to your career

Achieving a good level of English and maths is important so that you can compete in today’s labour market and securing the career you’ve always wanted. Alongside your full-time course, students will continue to develop their English and maths skills. If you haven’t yet achieved GCSE grade C in English and maths at 16 you will continue to study these by resits or by taking Functional Skills at an appropriate level.

Maths:

Mathematics is very important in all aspects of the Early Years Education sector industry.

  • For young children, the learning basic numbers and their differences is a key foundation block in their learning and central to the National Curriculum.
  • In a nursery, the ability to calculate parent payments in very important.

English:

  • Accurate spelling and a wide and specialist vocabulary are key when working with children and parents
  • Good quality Speaking and Listening skills are needed when communicating with colleagues, children and parents
  • The National Curriculum requires that children develop good English skills in speaking and written communication
  • Accurate reading is a vital skill when using medical documents as well as when following Health and Safety guidelines
  • Secure English is important when preparing a CV

There is a range of assessments throughout the course and you will also be assessed during your placement.  

Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by our Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2015-2020.

Entry Requirements (NV)

Entry requirements

Please note the entry requirements below reflect the new GCSE grading structure for 2017 entry.

You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including maths and English language, or at least 2 years’ relevant work experience.

School applicants will need to have a good school report and references.

This course requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS). Information about the DBS check and how to apply for it will be sent to you by our placement team.

Uniform

You will need to buy a uniform to wear during your placement. If you have any concerns with the cost of the uniform please discuss this with us before joining the course as we may be able to help meet some of the expense.

Your study programme

In addition to your full-time course every student has an individual study programme which ensures that you develop the right skills and experience to progress onto either higher education or gain employment. What’s included in your individual study programme will vary depending on what you have already achieved and your career aspirations.

Work placement

Work placement will form an essential part of your individual study programme and all students will be expected to complete an appropriate work placement related to their full-time course.

Work Placement (NV)

Work placement

This course has a mandatory placement. You will be required to complete two days per week on practical training, where you will be placed in an appropriate setting with children such as a day nursery, nursery school or a specialist placement.

Placements are organised by a specialised team of Employability Tutors based in hired@UCB who will also visit you out on placement to ensure that you gain the right practical skills.

A work placement not only gives you valuable experience, it also:

  • Helps you to apply what you’re learning into practice
  • It gives you a better understanding of how a company or organisation works
  • Helps you to develop essential skills such as time management, social and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Enriches your CV
  • Enhances a UCAS application and personal statement should you wish to progress to higher education
  • Helps you to consider wider future employment opportunities

At UCB we have a specialised team of Employability Tutors based in hired@UCB (located on the 7th floor at Summer Row) who will provide you with the necessary skills in order to source a work placement.

School of Education, Health and Community (Early Years)

Careers (NV)

Careers

Our students have gone on to work as nursery supervisors, pre-school leaders, playgroup leaders, special education needs support assistants, nursery nurses, nannies, childminders, teaching assistants and children’s representatives on cruise liners and at holiday resorts.You could also choose to join the degree or foundation degree in Childhood Studies, which is available at UCB.
