What is a Traineeship?

A traineeship helps young people aged 16-24 to become “work ready” for their future careers. It lays the groundwork for starting an apprenticeship or joining a practical, work-based course at University College Birmingham.

Whatever you decide to do, a traineeship will be looked on favourably by future employers. Bridging the gap between school and the world of work can be a daunting prospect, but a traineeship, which lasts 10 weeks, helps you over the hurdle.

You will be supported, your confidence and skills will increase – and it’s free. Any benefits you receive will not be affected.

Don’t worry if you haven’t yet achieved a grade C or above for GCSE English and maths. We will help you with that, too.

Traineeships at University College Birmingham

We offer traineeships in the following areas:

  • Chef Catering/Hospitality and Restaurant Service
  • Hairdressing
  • Childcare and Education
  • Health and Social Care
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Retail and Customer Service

How does a traineeship work?

  • You attend UCB and prepare for your work placement by undertaking vocational and work-preparation training. We will help you with your English and maths if necessary.
  • You attend UCB one day a week and take part in your work placement for 28 hours per week.
  • You might transfer to an apprenticeship at UCB or join one of our vocational courses in: professional cookery; restaurant service; hairdressing; childcare; health and social care; and travel and tourism.
  • You may be able to get financial support through the 16-19 Bursary Fund or the 19+ Discretionary Learner Support Fund. If you receive benefits you should speak to your individual Jobcentre Plus adviser.
  • If you plan to work with children or vulnerable adults (on childcare and health and social care courses), you will be vetted by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). We will get the ball rolling.

Why should you take a traineeship at UCB?

  • UCB is unique because it offers further education, including traineeships and apprenticeships, like you get at a college. But we are also a university. That means we have unrivalled contacts with employers in lots of different work settings, from bakeries and restaurants to hairdressers, nurseries and travel companies.
  • Our strong links with industry and our Ofsted rating of “Outstanding” means you will receive both a high-quality work placement and great teaching.
