CACHE Level 3 Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship
I chose the apprenticeship route because I wanted to be in work and earn money, but I knew I wasn’t finished with learning yet. An apprenticeship allowed me to earn and gain experience whilst studying for a Level 3 qualification.
The children I worked with were three years old and just about to go to nursery. I spent time shadowing the teacher, watching how she interacted with the children, and I was given the opportunity to plan and lead group activities to encourage their learning and development.
The people at Selly Oak Nursery were very supportive and allowed me to develop and manage activities that would help my learning. They made sure that I always had enough time to focus on my studies and complete my assignments.
I spent one day a week in UCB to touch base with my tutors and other apprentices and everyone was very helpful and showed me how to relate my responsibilities at work to my studies. At the same time, I could also apply new practical techniques I learned at UCB into practice at the nursery.
I really enjoyed doing my apprenticeship. Working within the industry made me realise that there are so many different opportunities and diverse career paths that you can progress into such as nursery management, activity co-ordination or even writing children’s books. I want to develop a broad skillset that will enable me to take my career in a range of directions.
