Professional cookery students learn how to get ahead

Level 3 Professional Cookery Diploma students begin their first term back at UCB with an informative talk from a BA Culinary Arts Management (CAM) student. 

Michael Topping, who is beginning his third year in CAM at UCB after a placement working at Galvin at Windows in Park Lane, London, spoke to the students about what they have to look forward to during their studies, what to focus on and how to get the most out of their time at UCB. 

“I wanted to talk to the students about the importance of keeping their attendance up whilst studying and taking advantage of any work experience opportunities that become available,” said Michael, who studied Professional Cookery himself before progressing onto his BA. “I also wanted to tell them about UCB’s kitchens and The Atrium restaurant, and how working there is just like working in a real industry setting.” 

John Penn, Assistant Dean of the College of Food at UCB, said: “It’s always beneficial for students to listen to one another’s working and learning experiences. Not only does it reaffirm that UCB’s teaching facilities accurately reflect industry standards, but it also adds to their enrichment and helps prepare them for work.” 

Michael has also been offered at job in the main kitchen of Simpsons, a Michelin star restaurant that currently features in the Sunday Times Top 30 restaurants in the UK.
