Teacher Training at UCB Declared Excellent by Former Students
The postgraduate teacher training programme at University College Birmingham has been rated as excellent by former students who are now working in schools.
Following a survey of newly qualified teachers by the Training and Development Agency for Schools, the College scored ninety percent or more in nine out of eleven questions, taking them above the national average for most areas of provision.
In addition, the College has been highlighted as one of only eleven institutions in the country to gain a high score for preparing students well to teach reading in schools.
The Initial Teacher Training Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), a one year, full time programme, focuses on teaching 3 – 7 year olds and gives students particular skills to work with children who have special needs.
Dr Danielle Carey, Dean of the School of Childhood and Education, University College Birmingham said:
“The survey determined how prepared students felt to start teaching roles on leaving college and we are delighted to have gained such positive feedback. Improving standards of teaching children how to read is a key priority of the Government at the moment, so it is also great news that our students felt totally equipped in this particular area at the start of their careers.”
94% of all last years UCB teacher training students are now working in schools.
