Students Raise Over £500 in Memory of Friend
Students at University College Birmingham have raised £550 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of a fellow student who tragically died recently.
Degree students, Nitisha Patel and Naomi Leslie and friends were keen to pay tribute to their friend Chetan Patel who died from a heart condition at the age of 28.
They made seven hundred cup cakes and muffins using low salt and low fat healthy recipes provided by the college’s bakery lecturers and sold them in college on one day with all proceeds going to the charity. Healthy heart awareness was also promoted in the college’s food outlets for the day with healthy recipe products on sale.
To boost the funds the college donated a percentage of a day’s takings from the bakery shop and the student guild encouraged people to donate to the British Heart Foundation collecting tins when attending social events.
Nitisha Patel said: “We are all devastated at Chetan’s untimely death. He was a very friendly, enthusiastic, kind and fun person who was exceptionally popular and a great friend to many. We wanted to do all we could to pay tribute to him and raising money for charity is a good way of keeping his memory alive”.
A magnolia tree has been planted in Chetan Patel’s memory at The Maltings, the college’s Halls of Residence, where he lived.
