Hair and Beauty Students Compete for the UK Skills
Five NVQ and National Diploma Hair and Beauty Therapy students are undergoing vigorous training to be selected to compete in the UK Skills regional competition.
The initial short list process involved an internal competition for all Hair and Beauty students. Louise Gould, a Beauty Therapy lecturer and the competition mentor, and lecturer Deborah Thompson judged students doing a nail file and polish and a facial. They were marked on their presentation, professionalism, preparation, health and safety and hygiene in the salon and their techniques whilst carrying out the treatments.
Five students with the highest marks were then selected; Laura Jepson, Saika Hussain, Katie Hatchard, Anna Korona and Cherish Jones (pictured left to right).
“I have learnt so much so far and I feel really honoured to have been chosen as one of the five students” says Cherish Jones.
The team of five are excited about the possibility of competing in UK Skills and reflect on how the competition will improve their employability and confidence as a beauty therapist. Laura Jepson says “I am very keen to compete in the competition. The extra tuition has been great and I feel a lot more confident with my techniques”.
Louise Gould will be working closely with the students in critiquing their skills and techniques for the second round of internal competitions in April. Louise will select the final three students to compete in The UK Skills regional competition on Sunday 8th May at the NEC, Birmingham. Louise says “Training and mentoring students for competitions is one of my passions, I watch them evolve, progress and achieve their dreams - the most rewarding result of all”.
We’ll be following the progress of the five students as they take part in the internal competition in April.
