Students Sweep the Board with Awards at Top Trade Show
A team of bakery and chef students is celebrating after winning a host of medals and awards at a prestigious hospitality trade show.
The students took part in a variety of competitions at Hospitality 2011, a national foodservice and hospitality show, recently held at the NEC, Birmingham.
Twenty five bakery students impressed judges with their technical skills and creativity and walked away with
multiple gold, silver, bronze and merit awards in the decorated celebration cakes, novelty cakes, pastillage and floral sugarcraft categories.
Five chef students took part in live theatre competitions and cold display work, winning bronzes and food hygiene awards. Mathew Shropshall, a chef lecturer at University College Birmingham also won gold and bronze in two competitions, with students helping as commis chefs.
An additional team of NVQ Food Service students helped to run the Parade Des Chefs restaurant throughout the show.
Neil Rippington, Dean, College of Food, University College Birmingham said:
"Everyone is delighted at this fantastic result. It is especially challenging for the students to compete at this event because not only are the judges industry professionals, everyone visiting the show is from the hospitality industry. Their expectations are high and our students certainly rose to the challenge. Congratulations to everyone involved”.
