Gurpreet wins Bronze
Gurpreet Singh Chana a Second Year student at UCB is celebrating after coming 3 rd in the British Culinary Foundation Young Chef of the Year Competition, the winners of which were announced at a Dinner and glittering ceremony attended by 100 industry guests here at University College Birmingham
Gurpreet who is 17 and from West Bromwich, studied at Alexandra High School, Tipton before starting NVQ Chef Catering and a National Diploma Food Service, alongside his studies and a part time job at The Hyatt hotel, industrious Gurpreet also runs his own business, ‘Gurpz The Chef’ providing buffets for functions.
Before the cooking stage of the competition Gurpreet made a paper entry, submitted a personal statement, menu and a portfolio. Then at the competition, also held here at University College Birmingham, he competed against 14 other finalists, aged 23 and under, who had just 2 hours to create a 3 course menu. Grilled Gurnard, with a Nicoise Salad

Chicken Forestiere, Fondant Potatoes, Savoy Cabbage and a Red Wine Jus

Mulled Poached Pear with Treacle Crumble, Vanilla Milkshake
As well as the accolade of 3 rd place Gurpreet won a Cheque for £50, trip to the Electrolux Innovation Centre in Italy, a set of chef’s knives worth £160, commemorative plate and framed certificate. Gurpreet plans to visit Italy in January.
Gurpreet plans to continue his studies with University College Birmingham and has his sights set on a Degree programme in Culinary Arts Management.
