Team Triumph in Major National Competitions

UCBGroup-DSC1243RolyChefs, bakers and hospitality students from University College Birmingham are celebrating after winning a host of medals and certificates at a major industry event.

The team travelled to London for Hotelympia, one of the largest hospitality industry events of its kind, taking part in a variety of competitions against students and industry professionals from across the UK.

Student chef, Thomas Harrison won a Gold and First in Class in the City & Guilds 7100 Challenge with his classical fish dish and had his prize presented by celebrity chef, Brian Turner.

Flying the flag for food service was Ben Hare who won a Silver award in the UK Skills Search for a Star (Waiting) competition.  As no one was awarded Gold Ben also gained First in Class.

A team of ten bakers took Silver, Bronze and Merits in the junior and senior classes including floral sugarcraft and decorated birthday, celebration and novelty cakes.  Laura Millerchip won Silver with her novelty cake in the shape of a chefs hat (See gallery of photos).

"The students performed exceptionally well and everyone is delighted at their success.  They worked hard to fine tune their skills and their efforts have paid off.  Hotelympia is a very prestigious competition for industry professionals, as well as students, and our team will have made a great impression on many of their potential future employers."
