Event Management Students Raise Money for Charity
A group of Events Management degree students has raised an impressive £3099 for a Birmingham based asthma charity.
As part of the Live Events module on the course, the 2 year students chose The George Coller Memorial Fund as their charity and the team of six set about organising a series of events to raise funds for the cause.
Alongside a successful street collection, a promotion in the UCB café and a silent auction, the main event was George's Birthday Bash, a children's themed party with an adult twist held at Bar One at the Maltings. Over 340 students attended, enjoying lots of activities including face painting, a ball pit, pass the parcel and a magician.
The party was staged to commemorate what would have been George's 16th birthday. Sadly George died of asthma when he was three and the Memorial Fund was set up 10 years ago by his mum, Kim Douglas to raise awareness of the condition.
The fundraising group were Jason Haines, Michelle Collins, Sinead Cusack, Alex Doyle, Ravneet Arri and Amy Farrell.
Events lecturer, Leila Edwards said:
"The live events module gives the students experience of working with outside organisations and helps to improve their networking and organisational skills. To raise over £3000 is an impressive achievement and all credit goes to the students for their hard work and dedication".
To present the cheque to Kim Douglas, the students made a special cake and took along the George-a–saurus mascot to St. Mark's Catholic Primary School in Great Barr where George’s brother attended until recently.
