Student wins award for his excellent restaurant service skills

Andrew Sargent with his awardCongratulations go to hospitality degree student, Andrew Sargent, 20, who has won a prestigious industry award.

At a recent ceremony in London, Andrew was given an Award for Excellence by the Academy of Food and Wine Service for his dedication and passion for the hospitality industry.

The Philip Thornton Award, sponsored by the Savoy Educational Trust, is awarded to those who understand and promote the role of food service in the hospitality business.

Andrew recently completed his NVQ Food Service and NVQ 3 Hospitality Supervision qualifications at UCB and is now studying for a Foundation Degree in Hospitality Business Management.

In 2008 he won Gold Award in the MARCHE awards and he has taken part in many other college events to help promote food service as a career.

His tutor, Andrew Bisconti, nominated him for the Award of Excellence giving this glowing report:

"Andrew has a very confident approach to his work and studies and his service skills and customer care standards are of a very high standard. From early on he demonstrated a real interest and flair for restaurant service and was quick to learn and help others develop too. His contribution to his own learning, the learning of his fellow students and his efforts and devotion to college made him the perfect candidate for the award and we are all delighted for him."

Just after Christmas, Andrew will take up his prize of a week's work experience at the Andaz Hotel in Liverpool Street in London which will add to the work experience he already has from a placement in John Burton Race’s restaurant in Dartmouth and his current job in the Harrington’s on the Hill restaurant in Kenilworth.
