Year of Sporting Success
The Guild of Students at University College Birmingham is celebrating the end of the most successful year ever for their sporting teams. In all 112 sports fixtures were played and the results show the hard work that has gone on this year.
Some of the successes of the year include Women's hockey, Men's basketball and the UCB cricket team coming to the end of the season as overall league winners and both the Netball 1st team and the Rugby team finishing 2nd in their leagues.
There was also success in football with the 1st team competing at the highest league level in college history, as a result of winning the league three years in a row and the 2nd team also having their most successful season ever - football has proved such a popular team that this year a 3rd team has been formed.
The Cakes Cup was played in April when current sports teams played teams of past students, matches were played in football, netball, hockey and rugby and to the current teams delight they won the competition overall.
May saw a hotly contested Varsity competition being played against Birmingham City University, playing across a variety of sports and the day of friendly rivalry resulted in a draw.
Current Guild President Ashley Gamble spoke of the success she has seen in her year as president and in previous years as captain of the Netball Club.
"During my fours years at UCB, sport has continued to grow from strength to strength and the Guild is extremely proud of its teams who compete week in, week out against Universities across the Midlands. As one of the smallest institutions in the region we do exceptionally well, with wins against even the largest institutions, such as Warwick and Birmingham City. I sincerely hope the success of the sports and societies continues to grow in years to come and wish the teams the very best of luck for the coming season."
