Shivaun preparing for her fundraising curry eveningCulinary Arts Management lecturer Shivaun Caffrey from University College Birmingham will fly out to Uganda later this month to start a new life as a volunteer worker.

Shivaun will be working for the next two years as a Manager at the New Court View Hotel in Masindi, a small town in North West Uganda. Her new job, a volunteer role organised by the international development charity, Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) will involve staff training, business development and setting up a project to teach young local women basic catering skills.

Shivaun will live in a small house in the remote town and to help her prepare for her new life she has used money given to her as leaving gift by work colleagues to buy mosquito nets and a wind up radio.

Before leaving the College, where she worked for nine years, Shivaun raised over £1,000 for VSO by staging a special Curry Night for colleagues family and friends at the student bar.

"I am really looking forward to the challenges of my new adventure. VSO does great work organising volunteer professionals to take their skills to countries in need overseas and I am keen to make a contribution and make a difference if I can." said Shivaun.

Ella Stewart, Community Appeals Officer, VSO said:

"It costs close to £30,000 to train and support one volunteer for a two year placement so, as well as her time and commitment, we are grateful for her fantastic donation. Shivaun has an inspirational spirit and I know she will do an excellent job in Uganda."
