University College Birmingham announces new Food Courses

The School of Hospitality, Food and Retail Management intends to offer two new courses in 2008*. The BA(Hons)/FdA in Food Marketing Management and BA(Hons)/FdA Food, Media and Communications Management have been designed to give students a strong practical knowledge of food commodities, recipe development with applied food sciences and nutrition, together with an understanding of consumer behaviour, contemporary issues in the food industry and applied marketing and business skills.

Jennie Howe Coordinator of Food, Consumer and Retail Programmes said "University College Birmingham has been training graduates for the food industry for over thirty years and many of its alumni now hold posts with major food manufacturers and retailers such as Cadburys, Nestle, Mars and Marks and Spencer. With the food industry, media and the government putting food quality and healthy eating at the front of their agendas, the University College Birmingham has responded with the introduction of two new exciting courses which will meet the need for greater understanding of food and make a contribution to the vital dialogue between the food industry and the consumer."

The BA(Hons)/FdA in Food Marketing Management will enable students to combine a working knowledge of both food and marketing which will enable graduates to seek management positions within industries that focus on promotion, and marketing food, brand management, category management, public relations and food product development.

The BA(Hons)//FdA in Food, Media and Communications management has been designed to give students a practical and theoretical knowledge of food together with the ability to apply creative communication skills effectively within a variety of forums. This combination of food knowledge with creativity, communication and management skills will equip graduates for posts in food research, food styling, food journalism, public relations and food marketing.
