Katherine makes pastry for the desertUniversity College Birmingham students are celebrating after winning the Midlands heat of the Brakes Student Chef Challenge 2008.

During a full day of rounds held here in the University College's competition kitchen eight teams of student chefs from across the Midlands region cooked a three course meal for a panel of professional chef judges.

The results announced at the end of the day saw NVQ Level 3 Advanced Food Preparation and Cookery Students Don Hilario, Jozef Patalong and Katherine de la Torre taking first place. Their starter of roast loin of lamb with a salad nicoise, a halibut main course and a desert of Warm chocolate tart, spiced Raspberry compote and clotted cream proved a real hit with the judges.

They will now go on the finals on 20th Feb at the Hotelympia show in London.
