TV test for students

Two University College students have been finding out more about how food makes it to their plates, by taking part in a BBC television show which screens tonight (Tuesday January 8th).

Culinary Arts Management students Ben Ebbrell and Ed Allen worked behind the scenes on the new series of Kill it, Cook it, Eat it on BBC Three, in which invited guests follow the production of food from the farm to the abattoir and then the dinner table. They are then asked whether they still want to eat the meal which has been prepared.

Ben and Ed worked backstage as home economists, helping with the production of food seen on camera, and their efforts were so successful that they ended up cooking on-set as well.

Series presenter and lead home economist Kate Moore said: "Ben and Ed were extremely hard-working, enthusiastic and honest team players. Their contributions ensured the smooth and successful running of the food side of the show and they were a real pleasure to work with."

Ben added: "It was a long week but there wasn't a moment went by when we weren't learning something new. It was a brilliant way to get our first insight into the TV industry and one which I hope won't be the last. Everybody on set was willing to go out of their way to teach us as many tricks of the trade as they could.

"Watching the slaughter process is not a pleasant experience, but having a real understanding behind exactly where the meat we would usually prepare in the restaurant comes from makes you appreciate it so much more."

The first programme in the series will be screened on BBC Three on Tuesday January 8th at 10.30pm.
