Students excel at Good Food show

Bethany Betts checks everything is up to scratch front of houseWalking through the vast halls of the BBC Good Food show held last week at Birmingham's NEC it was hard to go too far without bumping into a College of Food student or member of staff; both past and present.

The show, launched in Birmingham in 1991, has strong links with the College of Food and these links continue to go from strength to strength.

The college was represented both with its own stand; promoting the work of the college and with Hospitality and Events and Food and Consumer Management students employed to work for companies such as Verpoorten Advocat and Magimix promoting their products.

Chin Fai Chan backstageAs well as a presence front of house there were students working behind the scenes prepping for cookery demonstrations by chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Rachel Allen and Jamie Oliver.

Then when the chefs and VIP's needed a break and a bite to eat they headed to the Sainsbury's Super Theatre Hospitality area where cooking for them was, yes you guessed it, College of Food students.

Catching up with some of the students at the show all of their experiences had been positive. 4th Year Culinary Arts Management student Chin Fai Chan, backstage at the Sainsbury's Super Theatre, said "I'm enjoying every minute of my time here and as a final year student I'm using the opportunity to make contacts which I hope will help me when I start looking for a job when I graduate".

Whilst at the Kitchen Clinic, Home Economist Lisa Harrison was singing the praises of NVQ 3 Professional Cookery students Bethany Betts and Romel Best "They've been great - when I realise something needs doing they’ve already done it - we're in front of schedule".

Joshua Griffin picks up some tips from Gordon RamsayFriday saw the college and its students taking centre stage at the Gordon Ramsay scholarship; with 8 places in the final, two of them were taken by College of Food students. Competing were 1st Year Culinary Arts Management student Joshua Griffin and eventual winner Adam Daniels, a 4th Year on the same course. More to follow about Adam's win in a future news item.
