College experts speak on leadership

Among the topics discussed was the importance of creativity in the classroomThree lecturers from the College recently shared their thoughts on leadership at the annual conference of the Titan partnership of inner-city schools in the North-West of Birmingham.

The conference, which took place earlier this month at Aston Villa Football Club, aimed to share good practice and new thinking about leadership in schools.

Early Years programme managers Theresa Morris and Dr Marj Jeavons led a workshop on leading creativity in learning, analysing how to encourage creative thinking from learners of all ages.

Theresa said: "We discussed what creativity was, how it could be defined and how to encourage children to be more creative in their thinking, using our knowledge of different theories, government reports and our own experience as teachers.

"There were three different sessions with about 20 people in each, including trainee teachers and those involved in training others, and it went really well."

Martin Stevens, who teaches on the College's Health and Social Care programmes, presented a workshop on leading successful vocational courses. Participants examined student expectations, ways of overcoming barriers to learning, developing skills to learn in a vocational context and practical issues that arise when sending students out on placement.

Director of the School of Childhood and Education, Joan Hendy, said: "I was very pleased that three of our staff were invited to take part in this event, and the feedback on their sessions was excellent."
