College trains supermarket bakery staff

The first group of traineesLecturers from the College have recently been passing on their expertise to instore bakery staff from supermarket chain Morrisons.

In a new arrangement, workers from the firm will spend four one-week placements at the College over the course of a year, learning specialist baking techniques, which they can then put into practice during their day-to-day work.

The first eight recruits spent their first week at the College in September, where they took their first steps towards gaining an NVQ Level 2 in Bakery.

Bakery lecturer Cyril Scorse said: "Each morning they've been learning the theory about the different ingredients used in bread-making, then they're taught the practical skills in the afternoon.

The arrangement with Morrisons is the most recent of several partnerships the College's School of Bakery has enjoyed with leading companies in the sector.

College Head of Bakery Dawn Gemmell added: "We're delighted to be working with Morrisons for our latest partnership with the baking industry, and look forward to helping train their staff for years to come."
