Fundraising proceeds handed over

Some of the students with Cancer Research UK's Miranda WilliamsThe proceeds from a series of charity events organised by second-year students on the College's Marketing with Events Management programme were handed over to a representative of Cancer Research UK this week.

The students had all been involved in arranging an activity as part of their Events Operations module, and all money raised has been donated to the charity.

There were eight groups taking part, who organised a music night for unsigned bands, a fashion show, a sports experience day, a talent show, a race night, a five-a-side tournament, a jazz night and a cultural music and dance night entitled Thrillogy.

In total, over £4,000 has been raised, and it was collected by Miranda Williams from Cancer Research UK during a presentation at the College.

Lecturer Suzanne Wells said: "Each group came up with a concept, researched it, designed the publicity and arranged finance - they were not given a budget for the event, so all the money they raised came from sponsorship and ticket sales.

"They drew on what they'd learned in various modules on their course, but they were also given specific lectures for this module on planning, management, finance and legal matters.

"It's been a tough, challenging project but it's all been worthwhile, both because of all the money we raised for such a good cause and because of all the skills the students have gained by doing it."
