Live music event for charity is a great success

Organising group Jon Young, Laura Cole, Dan Gabriel, Ruth Hughes and David BensonA group of six College students on the Marketing and Events Management degree programme organised and staged a live music event in aid of Cancer Research UK, which raised over £400.

unSIGNED Live took place at Bar Academy in Birmingham on Tuesday, May 15. The idea was to plan and hold an original concept event and raise as much money for charity as possible. The students' efforts also counted towards the final grades they obtained for their course.

The group, consisting of David Benson, Laura Cole, Daniel Gabriel, Ruth Hughes, Jon Young and Zahoor Nisa organised the concert to showcase some of the best new unsigned band talent from around the country. Performances included an acoustic set from Wolverhampton's Layla Salter, Surrey group Sunsoma and local Birmingham band Dirty Soul while the headliners, Vinyl Collide, came all the way from Leeds.

Over 150 tickets were sold and an incredible £146 was raised by the raffle on the night. This was made possible by sponsorship from a number of Birmingham companies who donated prizes, notably Sound Control in Snow Hill who gave an electric guitar and amplifier worth over £100 and the Carling Academy who gave two tickets to a performance at their venue next month.

Headline act Vinyl Collide on stageMiranda Williams, Cancer Research UK's Birmingham representative said: "We are delighted that students from the College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies organised such a fantastic event at Bar Academy in aid of Cancer Research UK.

"The whole evening was a huge success and all of the bands who performed took part for free. Cancer Research UK relies entirely on donations to fund groundbreaking research which is why it’s so important that events like this are a success."

The students would like to thank everyone who attended for their support during the event and to all the businesses and bands who helped make the event such a success and raised an incredible amount of money for such a worthwhile cause.
