Funds raised for children's charity
A group of students from the College's BTEC National Travel and Tourism programme have helped to increase awareness of child protection issues, while also raising money for charity.
The 13 second years decided to support the NSPCC as part of their Conferences, Exhibitions and Events module and organised a fundraising night at a city bar and a raffle, as well as giving a presentation on the charity's work.
The night out at the Indi Bar was organised and promoted by the students themselves, with £2 of the £3 entry fee for the first 45 guests, and the full £3 from everyone else going straight to the charity.
For the raffle, the students got hold of prizes from companies including Starbucks, Nicky Clarke hairdressers and Birmingham City FC. In total, the charity events raised over £300.
Each student also researched a specific part of the presentation, which they gave to fellow students on tourism and sport courses, while guest speakers Helen Sullivan and Satnam Johal were invited in to give further information on the NSPCC's work and answer questions from the audience.
Lecturer Yvonne Garner said: "The group did remarkably well as it was all their own work – they arranged the raffle prizes, organised and promoted the event at Indi Bar and researched the presentation themselves.
"They all did a very professional job, and it's been a great way for them to put what they've learned on the course into practice."
They were the third group to organise a charity event as part of the tourism course, with the two other groups raising funds for Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation last month.
