Student's Celebrations for Europe milestone

Aivar Ustinovskij is ready to mark Europe DayA College student will be marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the European Union with a series of events at the College, devised as part of his Entertainment Management course.

Aivar Ustinovskij, from Lithuania, has arranged for a number of exhibitions and activities around the College on Europe Day - Wednesday, May 9.

There will be an exhibition and quiz in the library on the history of the organisation, while the student café will feature more on the union's contemporary role - including the Charter of Fundamental Rights for its citizens.

There will also be a special European-themed menu for the day, with dishes from Poland, Portugal, Spain, German and France, as well as the UK, and music from the Eurovision Song Contest will be playing.

There will also be information on display in the Brasserie, for the benefit of visitors to the College, and the day will be rounded off at around 1.30pm, with a balloon launch from the roof of the College.

Aivar said: "As part of the course, we have to organise our own event and when I looked at what significant dates there were in May, I had either May Day or Europe Day.

"When I spoke to other people at the College, I found most were not aware of Europe Day so I decided to do something to promote it."

Aivar will also be putting the information he gathered during the planning of the event on the internet, with a link being put up on Blackboard from Wednesday.
