Competition success at trade show
Students from the College have been showcasing their talents at the 2007 Hospitality show, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham.
The event is aimed at people who work in the catering industry and exhibitors included food producers, equipment suppliers and business consultants. There were also demonstrations of cooking techniques taking place throughout the three days.
Three NVQ Catering students took part in the Live Theatre show, where they competed against other young chefs, some of whom were already working full-time in the industry, to prepare a dish in a specific category.
Joanna Hyde won a silver medal in the Junior Fish category, Claire Hutchings received a bronze medal for her Junior Lamb entry, and Natasha Betton won a merit award for her Warm Salad.
Lecturer Giovanni di Vito said: "They worked extremely hard, coming in to help out at the Atrium in the evenings to get extra practice, on top of their normal College work.
"They were also competing against under-23s from the catering industry, not just other students, so they should be very proud of what they achieved."
NVQ Level 3 Hospitality Supervision student Mark Faithful was also at the show, where he prepared cocktails at the Best of British demonstration, which was set up to mark the UK's hosting of the 2011 World Skills Competition.
A group of ten food service students were participating at La Parade des Chefs, where they served a four-course meal which was prepared by chefs from three top restaurants on three different days - Simpson's in Birmingham, the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland and Claridge's Hotel in London.
And students on the College's bakery courses took part in the Salon Culinaire Competition at the show. Lindsay Bullock won a merit award in the Decorated Celebration category, while Ruthai Udomkaewkanjana took a silver award for a Decorated Celebration and a bronze prize for her Miniature Sugar Flowers.
Colin Hunt was given a bronze award for his Floral Sugar Craft, as was Gill Collier who also won a bronze award for her Bridal Bouquet. Four students won prizes in the Decorated Celebration Cake category - a bronze for Lucy Baylem, a merit for Keira Roe and Samantha Blake and a silver award for Georgina Elliott.
